Jon Guthrie gets a real kick out of opening his Crewe pay packet – because he used to PAY to play.
The defender, 21, has jumped six divisions since he stumped up £3 a week to turn out for Wessex League side Pewsey Vale just 18 months ago.
Ahead of today’s trop to Notts County, he said: “Playing football for a living is a great privilege.”
“It was a big step up to reach Crewe’s Under-21s and now it’s a huge step into the first team.
“But I just want to keep progressing.”
